In kindergarten, our objectives for the children are:
- for them to be able to understand English by the end of the first year,
- to be able to speak in English by the end of the second year,
- to have acquired all the necessary skills and competencies for starting primary school.
• In the first year of kindergarten, all of the teaching (100% of the contact time) will be done in the English language by an Anglophone or bilingual teacher, supported by a classroom assistant. Together they will obtain the required early years apprenticeship objectives such as: socialisation, group dynamics and cooperation, visual media and expression, etc…
• In the second year of kindergarten, most of the teaching is done in English by an Anglophone or bilingual teacher, with around 20% of the contact teaching time being spent on the acquisition of the French language (through the use of songs, poetry, language arts …) by a Francophone teacher.
• In the last year of kindergarten, 75% of the time is taught in English. 25% of the time is spent on French, with an emphasis on the introduction of basic reading (mono-syllabic), writing and numeracy techniques.
By the end of primary school, our objectives are for each child:
- to be able to understand any Anglophone person,
- be able to express themselves comfortably in English in several everyday situations,
- be able to respond to precise instructions, read and write in English,
- to have acquired the necessary competencies to enter French Collège.
• Once in primary school (CP, Year 1, Grade 1), teaching time will be split into 50% English and 50% in French.
We will be following the objectives of the French National Curriculum for all subjects. French language arts, numeracy, for example, will be taught in French by a qualified and experience teacher while the humanities such as history, geography, art, physical education and science will be taught in English.
Until the end of the third year, English is just part of the whole experience.
Oral expression is supported by various means: songs, nursery rhymes, poetry, stories…
From the 5th year on (CE1), as soon as children master reading in French, English reading is progressively introduced.
Any pedagogical media recognised by the French Education Nationale will be used for teaching French.
For all the daily situations of school and group life (meals, games, breaks, classroom…), the children will be free to communicate both in English or in French.
A good mix between Anglophone and Francophone children is going to be a great help for a two way linguistic interaction.
